The practice of meditation is not only found in the spiritual disciplines of the East, but also in the Christian tradition. John Main, a Benedictine monk, born in London in 1926, rediscovered Christian Meditation in the 20th Century and proposed it to contemporary women and men seeking sense in their lives. His Teacher was a Hindu Monk, Swami Satyananda, who transmitted him the technique of Hindu Meditation during his youth. Later John Main discovered that similar practices existed in Christian tradition. When he entered the Benedictine order, Main resumed the practice of meditation while founding in the writings of John Cassian a parallel with mantra meditation: the suppression of thought and image, the repetition of a short phrase to facilitate this letting go, the concept of the poverty of spirit throughout prayer. Main moved to Canada in 1977, to open a house of prayer in Montreal and died in 1982.

It can be said that this volume is based on three great acts: the Christian act; the testimonial of that act in the New Testament; and the configuration of that act in history (primarily the history of the first centuries) through the service of ministry. Over the centuries, the crisis in ordained ministry has not been exclusively about the problem of celibacy, even though that is important, and this book certainly includes a reflection about it. The crisis is, above all, a crisis of identity due to the progressive disfiguring of the sense of the mission which Christ left to his apostles and which made of the early church as well as the later church an essentially missionary institution.For this reason, J.I. Gonzalez Faus insists in these pages that all ministry, and specifically the ordained ministry, must express this same missionary spirit in order to avoid a relapse into pre-Christian religious beliefs, such as the belief in «sacred mediators» that threaten the exclusivity of Christ's mediation, as it is ascertained in the New Testament. The churches of the Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline Epistles, with their lessons in plurality, creativity, and enthusiasm, as well as their strong desire to be «communities of contrast» due to their evangelical style of exerting authority, have given today's Church the inheritance of an enormous freedom to reconfigure itself.A careful review of the Church's history, however, shows a structuring of the ordained ministry influenced by a progressive privileging of the clergy within the Church, which, as the author explains, must be overcome today by substituting the binomy of lay-clergymen with the model of community-ministries. With the increasing numbers of Hispanics in North America, there is a growing need to express the Christian faith in ways that are meaningful to the Latino/Hispanic community. Although there have been many attempts to do this, little has been written that defines in a systematic way a meaningful theology for North American Hispanics. Although Goizueta recognizes that “Hispanic” and “Latino” might be artificially imposed labels, he finds a common link in the Spanish language and a shared culture. Tomáš Špidlík was born in Boskovice, now in the Czech Republic, in 1919. In 1938, he entered the Department of Philosophy at the University of Brno, in what is now the Czech Republic. In the following year, he entered the Jesuits. In 1951, Špidlík began broadcasting programs from Vatican Radio to the countries behind the Iron Curtain calling for freedom. Among others, he met with Alexander Dubček, the former First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and Václav Havel, who became President of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic after the fall of the communist regime. His Sunday homilies in the Czech language have been translated and published in various languages including Polish, Romanian and Italian. 1955 marked the beginning of his university career as a professor of Patristic and Eastern Spiritual Theology at various universities in Rome as well as around the world. He was made Cardinal in 2003 and has become known as one of the greatest experts in the spirituality of Eastern Christianity today. As a prolific author, he has been equally acknowledged in the academic and international fields, and has been chosen «Man of the Year, 1990» and «the most admired person of the decade» by the American Bibliographical Institute of Raleigh in North Carolina. He was also decorated with the medal of the Masaryk Order, one of the highest honors of the Czech State, by President Václav Havel.

Sergio Bastianel s.j., born in 1944, is currently Ordinary professor of moral theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and also serves as its academic Vice-rector.
