What distinguishes catholic exegesis from other approaches to interpreting Scripture? This study examines the Pontifical Biblical Commission’s document, The interpretation of the Bible in the Church, and derives from it twenty principles of Catholic interpretation. The meaning of each of these principles is explained and its significance is discussed in light of commentary on the Biblical Commission’s document, magisterial documents on Scripture, and contemporary scholarly discussion. This volume includes a preface by Card. Albert Vanhoye, formerly Secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, a bibliography of works about the Commission’s document and of works cited, a general index, and a glossary.

Peter S. Williamson received his M. A. in theology from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and his S.T.B., S.T.L. and S.T.D. in biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He is a married layman who has been involved for nearly 30 years in evangelization and pastoral ministry in the United States, Lithuania and Kazakhstan.

Taking fully into account a half-century of immense changes in Mid-East politics, travel, labour, this book might best be regarded as a “job description” for one aiming at the low-paying but much needed chair of Archaeology-Geography in an Institute of higher biblical studies. The applicant will have a modest string of publications relating to college degrees, not so much “Archaeology cognate to Anthropology”, but rather “Near Eastern (or even Classical) Studies”, chiefly the history, religions, and documents of Egypt and Mesopotamia deciphered by two centuries of digging.

Robert North after completing his doctorate in exegesis in 1951 was designated by his Jesuit superiors to “teach while learning” the courses in archaeology and geography at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, which arranged for him opportunities to serve as apprentice on the excavations of Jericho, Diban, Byblos, Warka, and Boghazköy.

This is the first published synopsis of 1 and 2 Maccabees. It includes not only all parallel sections of these two books but also Books 12-14 of Josephus’ Jewish Antiquities to the extent that they are paralleled in 1 Maccabees or in the Jewish War. Thus the major sources for the history of Palestine from 175 to 37 B.C.E. are made available here together for the first time. The synopsis aims primarily to serve as a basic tool for the literary and historical analysis and comparison of the texts included. It shows, in most cases unequivocally, how the texts arranged here in parallel columns deal in different fashions with the same events. It assists the researcher in identifying and comparing different types of relations between various sections of these texts.

Joseph Sievers began his studies at the University of Vienna and at the Hebrew University. He holds a Ph.D. in Ancient History/Jewish Studies from Columbia University (1981) and a Lic. Theol. From the Gregorian University (1997).
