The first part of this work is an investigation into the history of marriage convalidations in general prior to the 14th century. Since a sanatio in radice is a form of convalidation, it is in the dispensing activity of popes, councils and bishops that we will find whatever evidence there is concerning the genesis and early evolution of the sanatio. The first chapter ends with a demonstration of the inaccuracy of the commonly accepted opinion today regarding the first example of a sanatio in radice. Next we will describe the elaboration of the theory of the sanatio as it appears in the writings of the classical canonists. We will show that this method of convalidating marriages answered a definitive need, namely the defence of the Holy See against charges of undue interference in temporal affairs in the legitimation ad temporalia of bastard children living outside the papal dominions. In the third chapter we will trace the reception this new theory met with in the writings of the post-classical canonists, until it became the common opinion of the authors. We will then turn to examine whatever evidence we have as to how often the popes actually granted sanationes in radice during the two centuries before the Council of Trent. Finally we will analyse the various elements that go to make up this extraordinary form of marriage convalidation as it was conceived by its author and by subsequent canonist.

The history of the Catholic missions in China, more than that of any other mission field, displays bright lights and dark shadows. From the time of Christianity’s first contact with China in the 13th century, the Church achieved victorious expansion and had well-founded hopes for the conversion of the whole Chinese nation: but she also experienced tragic failures. The history of the Chinese missions is rich in great initiatives, admirable talents, and heroic sacrifices. In this vineyard of the Lord, along with others who were not always at the height of their sublime vocation, there worked great men, saints, martyrs. The 18th century however, is one of the less inviting periods of Chinese mission history. After the great successes and hopes of the previous century, there followed frustrations, persecution, failure and decline. Nevertheless, even in this period of decadence, there were great men on the scene. One of them was Gottfried Xavier von Laimbeckhoven, Jesuit, missionary and bishop. Over a span of fifty years he was in the center of events and, in the light of this great though tragic figure, we can study the history of the missions of China for the period between 1738 and 1787.

At the origin of Modernity, during the XVI and XVII centuries, the Church partecipated with great commitment and with a positive spirit. Starting from the XVIII century, however, she distanced herself from those cultural currents that imbued ever wider spaces in society. In order to understand teh Church's role in contemporary culture it is necessary to look at these centuries of the Modern Age with a spirit of constructive discernment. We are, in fact, its children.

 In collaboration with I. Colagè, P. D'Ambrosio, L. Torcal

In this book the author and his coworkers try to show how fruitful is to deal with current scientific matters for philosophy and theology. The book will give some insights and open new paths of reflection rather than giving a systematic or accomplished summary. In particular, the author and his coworkers deal with these problems by “dialoguing” with three classical authors, each coming from one of the fields involved: Albert Einstein for science, Aristotle for philosophy and St Thomas Aquinas for theology. In this way, we shall discover that many of the problems raised in the current research can find a new light when examined through the eyes of these classical examinations. The Introduction, which tries to sketch the historical and contemporary background of the book, is followed by five other chapters. Chapter 2 develops some epistemological reflections on the sciences, philosophy of nature and theology of nature. Chapter 3 journeys among several scientific disciplines and branches with the aim of grasping the main fundamental lessons that the scientific research may offer to philosophy and theology. Such a journey brings to three heuristic philosophical principles in view of a renewed philosophy of nature. The following chapter (Chapter 4) opens to a further dimension, the theological one, trying to envisage some theological hints that can derive when the previous analysis is confronted with St Thomas’ thought and approach. The fifth chapter addresses anthropological matters in the light of the epistemological, philosophical and theological enquires conducted in the previous chapters. A conclusive chapter that summarizes all the main results follows.

Gennaro Auletta, Ph.D, is aggregate Professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome), where he teaches logic as well as several courses and seminars in philosophy of science and of nature. He is author of more than ten books, including the recently published Cognitive Biology: Dealing with Information from Bacteria to Minds (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Quantum Mechanics (with G. Parisi and M. Fortunato, Cambridge University Press, 2009), and of more than 50 papers. For “Analecta Gregoriana”, he is the editor (together with M. Leclerc sj, and R. A. Martinez) of the proceedings of the conference on biological evolution held at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 2009: Biological Evolution: Facts and Theories (Gregorian and Biblical Press, 2011).
